Unravel the Maze of Coding with Minor Inc.- Grandma Ener

Dear Mommies and Daddies,

How are you? I, for one am having some mixed feelings these days. Unless you just landed from Mars, you must have noticed that our lives now revolve around technology more than ever before. Just few years ago, people were worried about jobs getting offshored (or Bangalore-d), now working adults are worrying about jobs becoming extinct!

The world continues to spin at an alarming rate, and our kids need to keep up with the times. Teaching them the basics of computer programming gives them the early exposure that can steer them in the right direction.

According to a research, over next 10 years, there will be 1.4 million coding jobs, but only 400,000 programmers. Looking beyond the job market, programming teaches creative thinking and systematic reasoning skills- applicable in any profession

Ayah Bdeir, founder and CEO of littleBits, in a Wired article, sums it nicely when he says- “[Kids are] great at navigating around a touchscreen, but if they only ever know that much, they’ll wind up relying on other people . . . to decide what kind of technology they have access to.

Jeff Immelt, CEO of General Electric put it in a slightly more serious note on LinkedIn last week- “If you are joining the company in your 20s, unlike when I joined, you’re going to learn to code. It doesn’t matter whether you are in sales, finance or operations. You may not end up being a programmer, but you will know how to code.

And by the way, residents of the Little Red Dot are already making sure their children get an early exposure to the world of programming, read here for an article that appeared in Straits Times earlier this year.

Minor Inc has a full roster of Programming/ Coding partners who have some excellent programs for children 6-14 years old. Please go to the Minor Inc. App to get more details about program structure, dates, location and costs. Many of them have some excellent camps organised for the September and October holidays- do check them out. Here’s what the Minor Inc users have to say:

I liked it a lot, especially how I used iPads to make the robot move through the maze
– 7 yr old holiday camp attendee

…he enjoyed it as he asked to join another camp next time
– Mother of an 8 yr old

So use the upcoming holidays to enroll your kids to one of these classes. Let’s unearth the next Zuckerberg… lets Raise Superheroes

learn2code

Learn 2 Code (Bideford Road – Orchard, Orchard Gateway – Somerset MRT and Braddell Tech – Toa Payoh)
Scratch Programming Courses for 8-11yr olds. Syllabus includes: introduction to computer science, why programming is relevant and the fundamental building blocks to get started, including loops, events, sequences and conditions.
Courses are taught by an industry programmer with 15 years’ experience with Microsoft and Morgan Stanley. Students learn the best practices for correct programming methods and techniques. Modules are engaging and students develop logical thinking and solving problems while building interactive games and animations. Parents receive a digital summary of their child’s performance.
Individual courses are available as an 8-week program and is a popular option that maximizes students’ experiences.

The Kids Coders (Alexandra Road)
In their program, children create their own computer games by coding on Scratch 2.0. This bootcamp is specially designed to introduce the student to the fundamentals of programming in an entertaining, fun environment. By the end of the workshop the student would have coded more than 10 projects including at least six games. Specifically, the student learns using Scratch 2.0 and its interface, game story boarding, project planning and incremental programming, coding with motions, sounds, character controls, using data in your game, coding with time etc.

Kode with Kids (River Valley)
kode with kids school offers a foundation course in computer programming through a structured curriculum specially designed for children. The projects covered under the curriculum are aligned to STEM, integrating the four learning disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. kode with kids school follows an inquiry based approach to learning. Children are challenged to answer “why” and “how” as they develop their logical reasoning and problem solving skills. These skills are further honed as children get to solve analytical puzzles on some of the best coding based game apps. kode with kids School is of the first computer enrichment schools in Singapore to be licensed by MOE.
